With the exodus, I'm considering self hosting my own personal use or install and just subbing to external communities. Has anyone tried this? Recommendations between the two? Is it good or bad practice?

This would be in addition to my public mastodon instance. I wouldn't open this lemmy/kbin to other people. If I want to make my own community I'd make a separate public lemmy/kbin instance

@joeterranova I've only used lemmy but I heard kbin has better interoperability with Mastodon. I also heard lemmy is written in rust and kbin in something less efficient?

@iridaniotter kbin is written in PHP with Symfony, but I'm way more familiar with PHP than I am Rust
