Thanks to all my new followers. I’m vetting and following back as I have time to verify there is an actual and active person on the other end.

It does help make connections (for me, anyway) if there is more to a bio than, “escaping Twitter, I’m here now”. Please, if you can, take some time when getting rolling to include something about interests/likes, work/life, hopes/dreams—if we’re going to spend time together let’s build a better—more interesting, thoughtful, and engaged—place to hang out…

Pinned toot

With the recent exodus from whozit’s whatzit, it seems I have many new followers, which is great—thanks!
However, it appears that many have hidden (or otherwise limited access to) their posts/replies. Most likely this is the setting in Preferences > Other > Posting Privacy having been set to something other than Public. While I understand why this might be desirable (especially coming from that other “place”), if I can’t readily get a sense of what you’re about, I’ll be reluctant to follow back…

One of my pals told me my Twitter comments were as viscous as AOC and Nancy Pelosi. I though everyone’s were like that! I just got used to it. As much as you can. It’s nothing short of astounding to me that I can just post and engage on here and people respond in a way that seems normal and real. The Twitter comments world is distorted and dangerous. I don’t see how twitter can be fixed. We’re better off here. ❤️

Say NO to Deep-Sea Mining

For decades, large corporations have poisoned rivers, devastated forests, and displaced communities. Now, they’re rushing to mine minerals from the last untouched frontier on the planet – the deep sea.

Deep-sea mining would dwarf all other mining operations in human history, and it would take place in a part of the planet that we are only just now beginning to understand. If this dangerous experiment goes wrong, it risks triggering a domino effect of unintended consequences that could destabilize the ocean, trigger food insecurity, and affect all life on Earth.

As citizens concerned about the future of our planet, we urge you to support a moratorium on deep-sea mining and protect the #ecosystems that we all rely upon.

Viola Irene Desmond (July 6, 1914 – February 7, 1965) Canadian civil and women's rights activist and businesswoman of Black Nova Scotian descent. In 1946, she challenged racial segregation at a cinema in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia by refusing to leave a whites-only area of the Roseland Theatre. Desmond's case is one of the most publicized incidents of racial discrimination in Canadian history and helped start the modern civil rights movement in Canada.

I guess I should introduce myself properly. Yes I was on Twitter, in fact I've been on Twitter for over a decade.
I started tweeting about #climate and #climatechange, branched out into #auspol and #ausmedia but these days I tweet a lot about #covid.
I'm also heavily into blogging about TV but I've decided this Mastodon version of me will go back to its roots. So, yes, it's me. Dame Holly. Not LT. But obviously also LT. But not.
For those interested in #kdrama, I'm working out where that is best placed. Lee Tennant is branching out somewhere else.
So, hello! Nice to meet you.

So over on the other site earlier today I made some idiot joke about "why are there no film noir movies starring Sleestaks?" and that then sent me into Photoshop and 15-20 minutes later I inflicted this on an innocent world. Apologies to all. 😂

To help make #Mastodon connections: name 5-7 things that interest you but aren't in your profile as #tags so they are searchable. Then boost this post or repeat its instructions so others know to do the same. 👍

Bleak picture for Australia. Australia has warmed, on average, by 1.47 ± 0.24 °C since national records began in 1910, with most warming occurring since 1950. Clearly see reduced winter rainfall trend in SW and SE Australia, more torrential rain (and change to flood risk), reduced stream flow, reduced snow, fewer cyclones in our region, more extreme heat event days, increased fire weather, more marine heatwaves, accelerating sea level rise, increasing ocean acidification.

Indigenous Perspective and the #ClimateCrisis

by Chili Yazzie, Dine’ of Shipwreck, NM
Presented to #COP27 on November 10, 2022

“Our declaration is that the world’s governments, corporations and subscriber to modern science and technology do not consider all perspectives including the Indigenous Perspective. Thus, they are at a disadvantage as their high process is incomplete, they are in conflict with the Original instructions with their disregard for Indigenous Knowledge. For there to be a true opportunity To rescue humanity, our planet home; the wisdom of Indigenous people must be recognized and honored. We do have answers and solutions. You must hear us.

“Some of our elders, medicine people say it is too late, but of the sake of the grandchildren we continue to blow on the embers of hope. We will never stop fighting to protect our earth Mother, we must never stop defending the future of the grandchildren.”

Some thoughts on #Mastodon by Seth Godin:

"It’s a network in the real internet sense of the word: no one owns it.

"The people who get through the learning curve are more likely to be committed and perhaps generous.

"The culture of this federation is still being created. A lot of the folks who just arrived will be the authors of that #culture, and if they figure out how to be generous and kind, that’s what will get built."

From Grist --
grist.org/climate/deadly-rainf

"Climate change made deadly rainfall in West Africa 80% more likely to happen"

In September, Chad, one of the poorest countries in the world, experienced its heaviest seasonal rainfall in over 30 years. Thousands of residents of N’Djamena, the capital, were forced to flee their flooded homes. That same month, in Nigeria, more than 600 people died and nearly 1.5 million were displaced as a result of flooding, particularly in already vulnerable fishing and farming communities along the Niger River.

This deadly rainfall and flooding was 80 percent more likely to happen because of climate change, according to an international climate science collaborative. The study from World Weather Attribution also concluded that 2022’s seasonal rainfall in two major West African water regions was 20 percent wetter due to the impacts of climate change.
